November 2007
Reading the latest issue just now reminded me to drop you a line. I want you to know that timberDESIGN is the best architectural publication I have seen.
I had no idea that so many interesting (not to mention environmentally commendable) projects were going up around the world. As a Kiwi living in
Sydney, I miss seeing the abundant use of timber. Perhaps I would be better off living in Queensland. The articles are interesting and well written, and I have reread almost all of them. What surprises me most is the volume of good timber work going on in the UK.
What more can I say? Well done.

PRINCE COURT APOLOGY
Regarding the Prince Court Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur referred to in ‘Hearing’ the need for timber, (timberDESIGN Summer 2007), we wish to clarify that we were the submitting architects for the project, and that the architectural design was conceived and developed by Health Science Planning Consultants in association with Peddle Thorp Architects, Melbourne who deserve all credit for the architectural design of the project.
It is regrettable that, between myself and the magazine, aspects of the interview with regard to our involvement in the project, and details pertaining to the project, were inadvertently miscommunicated.
I sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused.

Editor Response
Having conducted this interview personally, I am certain there was never any intention on the part of Azman to mislead as to the design of the Prince Court project. Neither did we have any reason at the time to believe that other architects were involved.

WANTS TO KNOW MORE
As an architect, I enjoy the projects featured in your magazine but always want to know more. I believe timberDESIGN is intended to reach architects like myself and should definitely include:
• information on the timber preservative treatment used
• construction details for assembly
• detailing to prevent rotting and weathering
• structural limits of timber species
• resistance to termites.
The article on energy efficient windows [October 2007, p38-39] was crying out for some hard science and insulation calculations.
I would like to see articles on how timber weathers, how different species should be treated to ensure a long life and how timber can be detailed.
Looking forward to information I can use.

Editor Response
I am hopeful that you will be agreeably surprised with this edition, particularly our detailed story about the release in March of the world’s first Timber Service Life Design Guide for architects and specifiers. This resource will answer many of the questions listed in your letter. We have also strengthened our technical advisory team and will seek to offer more practical assistance as we go along.
